KulTour - Chapel route Breitenbach
Breitenbach is the village of chapels. In almost every hamlet, you will find a beautiful chapel. Often the chapels were built because someone recovered from a serious illness or due to other adversity that could be warded off.
The following route can be done on foot or by bicycle (although a narrow, steep connecting path cannot be managed by bicycle - it is "bypassed" during the bike tour according to the description).
The start and end point of the route is accessible not only by car but also by regular bus.
The route starts at the Antonius Chapel (Haus 29a, 6252 Breitenbach directly on the L211 below Pension Edelweis).
The chapel dedicated to St. Antonius in the district Straßmühl was first mentioned in the 17th century. The miller Peter Kurz had the Antonius Chapel built around 1675. The chapel is owned by the parish of Breitenbach.
After visiting the chapel, the route goes towards Pension Edelweiß. Directly at Pension Edelweiß, turn left and follow the path towards Saplhof, which is located on a hill. Pass Saplhof and go about 1.5 km along the street towards Mahdhof through the forest without turning off. In front of the Mahdhof, which appears alone in the clearing, stands the "Mahd Chapel," our second station. A rare wooden altar makes this chapel something very special. Pass the farm here and follow the signpost towards the hamlet "Haus" (you might need to push your bike briefly). After going through the forest, you arrive at a field path directly opposite the hamlet Haus. Continue towards the small white chapel, which can already be seen on the other side of the valley. Cross the state road L 211 and go towards the Mariahilf Chapel or "Heiserer Chapel" as it is called in Breitenbach. Right next to this chapel, a street continues uphill, marked hiking trail no. 10. Follow it to the first crossroads. At this crossroad, take the right branch onto hiking trail no. 11 towards the hamlet Rechleit. Pass the farm heading towards hamlet Zipfl, past a house, and follow the footpath northeast. This path crosses a small bridge through the forest until it leads into a street (warning: this short connecting forest path is very narrow and quite steep at the end! Push your bike!). Upon arrival, turn left, walk uphill along the street to the "Antner Chapel" which is located at a crossroads. The Antner Chapel, a Lourdes chapel, was built in 1910. It has a shingle-covered gabled roof. Above the round-arched portal of the chapel is a beautiful round medallion. Inside the chapel is a flat-arched niche with a Lourdes grotto (partly made of tuff stone). And on we go. When you stand in front of the Antner Chapel, follow hiking trail no. 10 the left path to the next crossroads and at the next crossroads take the right path towards Specka Farm (a single farm on the hill). Pass the farm and continue about 1 km without turning off along the gravel path eastwards to the sign marking Jocher Chapel hiking trail no. 19 A. From there, a relatively steep footpath (about 10 minutes) through the forest (best to leave the bike at the bottom if possible) leads directly to the "Jocher Chapel".
Interesting additional information: if you follow the very steep path upwards from Jocher Chapel, you reach the hamlet Pumphaus in the Brandenberg valley after about 45 minutes. This ancient path "over the Jocher", as it is called in the Brandenberg valley, was used by the Brandenberg inhabitants as the fastest connection to Breitenbach, where they, for example, sold their sheep wool at the Jordan weaving mill.
Return: Variant 1: From Jocher Chapel, go back down the footpath to the gravel path until at a fork you leave hiking trail no. 19A to the right onto hiking trail no. 10 towards Berau. Just after Berau, you reach hiking trail no. 9. Follow this until you find hiking trail no. 8 (Berau path). This leads directly back to the starting point at Antonius Chapel.
Variant 2:
From Jocher Chapel, go back down the footpath to the gravel path until at the fork take hiking trail no. 19 towards Breitenbach/Ramsau. In Ramsau, turn onto hiking trail no. 8 (Berau path). Follow this via hamlet Bichl, the Bichl farms up to the federal road L211 and return to Antonius Chapel.
If you arrived by regular bus, the next bus stop is near Antonius Chapel (bus line 4113).
