Adlerweg stage 07: Steinberg – Erfurter Hut

From the Gasthof Waldhäusl, head a few meters southeast and then immediately take the village road that branches off to the left from the main road. After a short distance, turn right toward "Durrahof." On the largely traffic-free road, walk comfortably down into the small valley of the Mühlbach, along the stream and then across the Ache. Then ascend comfortably again, passing the Enterhof to Durrahof. From here, follow the signs "Rofan" and continue on a forest road. Later, follow the signs "Zireiner See" or "Erfurter Hütte"; the path gently ascends scarcely noticeably through light forest and meadows. After a farm, the path splits – take the upper route and do not go down.

The path immediately turns into a trail. After crossing a stream with a small waterfall, the trail meets a forest road – here turn right onto the forest road toward "Bayreuther Hütte." At the next fork, go left uphill along the stream. Later, a trail leads to a wide forest road. Continue right and then almost immediately take the forest road on the left uphill, which quickly becomes a trail. On the trail in the light forest, walk along the stream toward "Zireiner See." The stream is crossed (no bridge), then it gets steeper in the forest up to the open alpine terrain to the idyllic Schauertalalm. Then continue on the trail uphill toward "Schauertalsattel."

The now quite rocky trail covered with roots leads directly and briskly upwards in this section, often through dwarf pine. One reaches a basin – here go toward "Erfurter Hütte" and south past the Zireiner See. Now orient yourself towards "Marchalm," a little later toward "Schafsteig (caution when wet!), Rofan." The Schafsteig runs along the east face of the Rofanspitz and then diagonally upwards before leading through steep terrain to the Schafsteigsattel northeast of the Rofanspitze.

From the saddle, go a short distance down on the left in gentle meadow terrain. Shortly afterwards, follow the signs "Erfurter Hütte" or "Rofanseilbahn" and walk almost level on the trail south of the Rofanspitze to the pass. The trail then gently descends into a green basin. From here, continue comfortably down through alpine terrain to the Erfurter Hut directly next to the mountain station of the Rofanseilbahn. From there, either on foot (approx. 1 h 30 min) or by cable car to Maurach. Almost the entire route follows the Nordalpenweg 01.
